Season of Lent 2024

Lent at St Michael’s

We will be able to meet for most of our Lenten events and able to attend prayer times in the Church or GS Room, depending on work continuing in the Church, and so support each other in our Lent journey. We will have many usual Lent events, Stations of the Cross, Lent talks, times of adoration and soup lunches together.

Lent Course: Sycamore is a video presentation by Fr Stephen Wang, Rector at the English College in Rome, we will use four sessions on prayer and the adventure of the spiritual life. Sessions are entitled, The Power of Prayer, The Light of Christ, The Holy Eucharist and How to Pray. I hope you will find these sessions helpful.

These sessions will be on Mondays 26th February; 4th, 18th & 25th March at 12.30 for a simple soup lunch followed by a session. They will be repeated on the same Monday evenings at 19.30 followed by a period of adoration closing at 21.00.

Lent Breakfast: you are invited to share a Lent Breakfast at the Methodist Church in the High Street. This is a good opportunity to meet other Christians in town for a chat and breakfast, there is no charge but donations for Christian Aid. Breakfast is on Wednesdays from 21st February to 20th March, 08.30 – 09.15. See the poster on the boards.

Stations of the Cross

There will be Stations of the Cross every Wednesday at 18.30 to follow Jesus on the way of the Cross and meditate on his journey of suffering to the cross. Each week a different version of the meditations will be used to deepen our devotion to this journey of Redemption. These will be in Church if possible or in the GS Room using slide pictures of the Stations.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

There will be Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament every Thursday morning after Mass from 10.00 – 11.00. this will simply be a time of silent prayer which you are invited to attend to listen to and wait on God. The midweek meditation will begin this time of prayer each week.

Fasting

Lent is also a time of fasting from something we do in our life and by our fasting we draw our attention to God each day because we are doing without something that is usually part of our life. Fasting is very much part of our faith and is found many times in the Bible, people fasting for a particular intention before God and using their fasting as an intense form of prayer.
